Mayor Rodriguez offers the support of the city to Northern Chill
2010-03-08

On a March Sunday draped in glorious sunshine, the 15U and 16U Northern Chill volleyball teams prepared for a typical day of practice.
Stretching, followed by drills, ending with a simulated game called “free ball”, the girls approached this practice like many before it.  But this Sunday was different as a special fan appeared alongside the parents near the end of the scrimmage.  Greater Sudbury Mayor John Rodriguez – a former volleyball coach himself, came to practice to offer encouragement and tips, as both teams approach the high point of the season – the Ontario Provincial Championships.

“Hard work.  Discipline.  Dedication.  Those are what I believe to be the recipe of success”, coined the Mayor.  With all eyes on His Worship, this impromptu pep talk was meant as both a way to boost the spirits of both teams as well as to offer the support of the community through a gift – Greater Sudbury pins and a Flag of the City – to hoist proudly at the approaching penultimate tournament to be held in Waterloo in April.
Rodriguez further added, “No matter how you place [at the tournament], I am so proud of all of you, and the community is too.”

Both teams make their appearance at the Provincial Championships from April 23 – 25.  The 16U team will also represent their club and the city at the National Championships, to be held in Sherbrooke, Quebec in May.
