17U at Challenge Cup
2010-02-15
The 15U team travelled this weekend to Georgetown to compete in the championship division of the Challenge Cup. The first game of the round robin was played against Niagara Rapids Black which the team lost in two sets 19-25 and 13-25. The 15U team next faced the Hurricane Blue losing in three sets 11-25, 25-20 and 8-15. In the last game of the round robin, the team faced Oakville Thunder in which the girls took the game in two sets winning 26-24 and 25-15.
The 15U team ended up third in their pool which pitted them against MAC in the cross-over match. The girls played amazing and initially took the game in three exciting sets 17-25, 25-21 and 20-18. However, MAC placed a grievance against a Chill substitution and in an heartbreaking decision by the officials the girls had to come back to play the last set starting at 9-11. Sadly the girls ended up losing this rematch 10-15. This loss placed them again against the Oakville Thunders to play for 9th or 10th. The girls played hard but lost in two sets 13-25 and 23-25.
The team should be proud of how they handled themselves both on and off the court after the reversal of their win against MAC. I am sure they will come back stronger in the Bugarski Cup. Thanks to our coaches Mr. MacKenzie and Mrs. Guillet for all of their dedication and support.

All About Heart for 16U Chill at Challenge Cup
2010-02-08
The 16U Northern Chill Volleyball Team’s season continued on the weekend under clear and sunny skies at Kipling Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke.
Ranked 9th for the tournament, Chill faced an uphill battle to rebuild the confidence that so far this season, has uncharacteristically eluded this talented group of young ladies.
Starting the morning round robin pool, Chill faced off against the tournament’s top ranked Halton Hurricanes (Burlington) and dominated the first set, 25 – 14 with strong serving from Nicole Collard and Jaymie Adams. “It’s finally coming together”, quoted assistant coach, Amy Cliff. Unfortunately, the confidence that the girls seemingly had found, was lost again in a tough-to-swallow loss 14 – 25.
The second match of the pool play was against Interclub 15U (Toronto) and again, the “tale of two teams” appeared with a humbling 14 – 25 loss in the first set, followed by a gutsy 25 – 23 win in the second.
Finishing last in their pool, the task of maintaining their place in the Championship Division came down to a battle against BSV Smash (Hamilton), a team the girls beat in the McGregor Cup in January. The first set was indicative of the puzzling play that has dogged this team, with a loss 14 – 25. With two chances to “right the ship”, the “heart” – that coach Craig Thomson said was missing in the pool play losses shone through. With aggresive net play from Sidney Boivin and excellent serving from the team as a whole, Chill persevered with a 25 – 22 second set win and a 15 – 7 win in the tiebreaker.
While securing their place in the Championship Division going into the next tournament, Chill went up against the decidedly strongest team in the tournament – Interclub 16U. Despite carrying over from the match versus BSV what many thought was the “true” Chill style of play, the girls went down 16 – 25, and 14- 25. To complete the day, and to gain a higher ranking for the next tournament, Chill had to face an opponent from earlier in the day – Interclub 15U. A see-saw battle for the entire hour, Chill came out victorious with a 25-23, 23-25, 15-9 triumph to earn a very admirable 5th place finish. According to team co-captain Leeza Connor, “I like the quote: skill wins points [but] heart wins games. I believe that’s the type of team we are.”
Chill plays again at the Bugarski Cup in two weeks time

17U wins Silver in Stouffville
2010-01-28
The 17 U team travelled to Stouffville to the McGregor Cup Trillium B for their first tournament of the season. Due to road closures in December and thus not able to attend the Toronto tournament, they were more than eager to play. In the first round robin game, they were matched up against Etobicoke E381 and won 25-18 and 25-12. In the second game they faced Georgian Bay Vista and won the matches 25-20 and 25-13. With this record, they placed first in their pool. The girls were given a bit of a break before playoffs started.
In the quarter final game the girls found themselves against the Etobicoke Wildcats 16U. Chill took the first set 25-20. In the second set they played hard but fell short losing 19-25. The pressure was on for the third set since they were not ready to give up yet and managed to pull off a win of 15-10.
The semi final game saw them against the Orillia Suns. This was a huge game for Chill since a medal was in their reach and they needed to work together to get the job done. Chill won the first set 25-17 and lost the second set 15-25. It all came down to the third and final set. The two teams were well matched and with back and forth rallies and hits made it for an exciting game for both players and fans. Chill ended up winning the set 17-15 and were extremely excited playing in the finals.
The final game pitted them against the Halton Hurricanes who had yet to lose a single set in the tournament. With just finishing playing 6 sets in a row they knew it was going to be a tough match. Chill played hard the first set but lost 14-25. In the second set Chill rallied together and played very well to win 25-22. The excitement mounted and the girls played hard but were unable to defeat the Hurricanes and lost 8-15. They did however win a well deserved silver medal in this tournament. Great teamwork and effort and of course fan support added to the successful weekend.

18U Win Gold
2010-01-26
The journey continued this past weekend for the Northern Chill Girls 18U team as it travelled to Cambridge, Ontario to compete in the McGregor Cup, the second event of the season. After a less than satisfactory result at the first tournament, the squad was looking to bounce back with a positive effort. Buoyed by the return of starting setter Michelle Claveau to the line-up from injury, the team served noticed to the competition that a return to form would happen both quickly and emphatically.
Pool play began with the second ranked Chill justifying their pre-tournament hype, winning in straight sets over the Bluewater Blizzard (25-16, 25-19) and the Cambridge Hawks Black (25-7, 25-16).
With first place in their pool easily secured, the Chill would continue the march to redemption with a straight set quarter-final win over the Burlington Blaze, posting identical 25-18, 25-18 wins. The Georgetown Impact would be the next obstacle in the path of the team. A strong service game and efficient transition would prove to the difference as the Chill easily disposed of their counterparts in straight sets by scores of 25-10 and 25-12.
With the promised land within sight, the team prepared for what would prove to be their toughest competition of the day against the Forest City Green (London) in the Championship Final. The teams would trade the first two sets highlighted some ferocious attacks and spirited defense. The third and deciding set would see the team embrace their theme of the tournament of “Believe” and race out to an early 5-0 cushion. With a renewed commitment and resolve, the Chill would not be denied, capturing the third set and match by scores of 25-19, 22-25 and 15-9.
The team would also like to extend thanks to the many parents and family that attended the tournament and were a constant source of support throughout the tournament.
The 18U team will continue its journey now with preparations for the Bugarski Cup in London on February 6th.

Tough Test for 14U
2010-01-20
The 14U team travelled to Whitby over the weekend to participate in their first tournament at Championship Division. The team faced its toughest competition to date. Up first was a talented DRVC squad. The girls played well, however came up short loosing in two sets, 25-15, 25-17.
Up next was the Maverick Gold Diggers. The team came out strong, winning the match in three sets. 25-16, 18-25, 15-8. With a 1-1 record, the Chill faced the Storm Typhoon to decide final pool rankings. Needing to win one set to clinch second place, the girls struggled early in both sets before eventually loosing in straight sets 20-25, 22-25. This meant a fourth place finish, and a first round playoff match against the
Peel Selects team.
Once again, the team struggled early, and battled back hard in the end, but simply ran out of time. The second set saw the team face a tough server, who gave the Selects a lead the team just couldn’t come back from. The final score was 23-25, 12-25.
This meant the team would now move to the 9th/10th place match against the Barrie Elites. After a long day, the team battled, but again did not get the result they were looking for, losing 25-27, 21-25.
This 10th place finish means the team will be competing at the Trillium Division for the next tournament, with an eye on moving back up to the Championship Division.

16Us in Etobicoke
2010-01-16
The season continued this weekend for the Northern Chill 16U Girls volleyball team as they competed in the McGregor Cup held in Barrie. After last month’s 9th place finish at the Provincial Cup in Ottawa, hope and confidence was piled upon the girls to bring back some of the magic that in such a short time has given this team of young women a reputation for bringing a fierce and competitive game. They didn’t disappoint.
The round robin matches began with Chill competing against the Guelph Grizzlies in a mostly one sided battle, with scores of 25-20 and 25-12 indicating otherwise. Power from the left side and exceptional serving, combined with some lucky points taken by the Grizzlies, Chill prevailed comfortably. The next match in group play pitted Chill against the number 2 seed – Forest City Green, from London. With incredible net play from middles Kailey Bastien and Nicole Collard, Chill stubbornly held off the strong play of their experienced opponents to take the first set 27-25. Despite the jaw-dropping strength and jumping of powers Jaymie Adams and Allison Larson, Chill succumbed in the second set 12-25. The rubber match was a back and forth battle that saw some incredible passes and setting from Tamara McNair and Leeza Connor respectively, but unfortunately Chill lost 14-16.
Losing the match to Forest City would place the young ladies in a precarious position. Win the next match against the Cambridge Hawks, or be demoted to a lower division. With encouragement and support from coach Craig Thomson and the travelling band of cheering parents, the team won a heart attack-inducing game 29-27 and 25-20.
With their position secured in the Championship division for the next tournament, the girls set forth on winning the tournament for the right to move up to the Premier Division. Standing in their way was the Burlington Blaze. The volleyball gods were smiling on the girls in the first set with a close victory (29-27) followed by a concerning 12-25 loss in the second set. Despite some fine serving and exceptional defence, Chill fell 10-15 in the third and deciding set.
With the opportunity of promotion out of their reach, the coaching staff regrouped the team to prepare for the 5th place match against BSV Smash (Hamilton). With ranking points on the line, the team ironically smashed their way to victory 25-21 and 25-20, thus assuring a 5th place finish and a good ranking for the next tournament in a month’s time.

15U Season Opener
2009-12-04
The 15U Northern Chill team started their season with a trip to Barrie for the Provincial Cup. The team took their very first game in two sets against the Georgian Cubs 25-23 and 25-19. The team then faced the Aurora Storms in the second very close game of the round robin. The team fought extremely hard but succumbed after three very exciting games 25-22, 23-25 & 15-17.
The playoff's began with a game against the Orillia Suns. The team put forth a valiant effort but ended up losing 15-25, 25-21, 12-15. The battle for 5th place pitted the Chill team against the Barrie Elites which led to a win for the final game of the day 25-22, 25-13.
The girls should be very proud of their performance at the tournament and I am sure they are looking forward to showing off their skills at the McGregor Cup in January.
A very special thank you to our coaches, Mr. Mackenzie, Mrs. Guilett and our sports psychologist Jason for all of the support and amazing coaching!

16U Pre-Season
by: Rob Cundari
2009-10-26
It’s often said that a sporting season cannot be defined by the first practice or the first game, or in the case of the Northern Chill 16U Girls Volleyball team, the first tournament. In most cases, this is the time in a young season when optimism and a natural anticipation of what is to come takes hold. Judging from the first practice held this past Wednesday at Copper Cliff Public School, the optimism directed towards this team is correctly heralded.
This year’s 16U team takes on a slightly different look than the wildly successful 15U team from last year (which finished tied for 9th in the province).
Returning to this year’s team are Jaymie Adams (power), Serena Linley (power), Allison Larsen (power), Nicole Collard (middle), Elie Kleppe (middle), Sidney Boivin (right side), Tamara McNair (right side), and Leeza Connor (setter). New to this year’s squad are Kailey Bastien (middle) and Liandra Hunt (setter).
The team started off the young season in earnest with a trip to the 5th Annual Knights Invitational Tournament (16U/17U) held on October 24th, in Pembroke. According to Coach Craig Thomson, this tournament is an “excellent opportunity for the girls to come together and gel”; with the results posing no bearing on the starting ranking that the team will have prior to their first sanctioned tournament in December.
With only one practice under their collective belts, the girls were introduced to the purest form of competition by opening their pool against the defending 16U National Champions – Les Libelleules de Joliette. With natural jitters expected, the girls shook off the rust with a gutsy performance against a far more seasoned (and older) opponent. In the end, they succumbed 7-25 and 11-25, with outstanding serving from setter Leeza Conner.
The second round saw the girls face off against Ottawa Maverick, an opponent they would ultimately face again later in the tournament. A share of the spoils was dealt as the team split the two set game 12-25 and 25-19, including impressive displays of outside power from left-sided powers, Allison Larsen and Serena Linley. The girls finished the round robin portion of the tournament by facing Griffons de L’Outouais (11-25, 18-25) and Kingston Pegasus Rampage (25-16, 24-26), with outstanding net play on display by middle Nicole Collard.
The playoffs began with a surprising challenge from the Akwesasne Soaring Eagles, but on the backs of a complete team effort, the Eagles were sent home by scores of 25-11 and 28-26. The battle for 7th place in the tournament brought two newly familiar foes together again, with Chill facing the Mavericks from Ottawa once again. Nearly 10 hours after the girls took the court in their first game, this match was destined to be a classic. Starting on a rough note with a 19-25 loss in the first set, the team looked deep within its’ exhausted self to produce an inspired 25-23 win in the second set. The deciding set spoiled the passionate fans with “back and forth” play, with both teams demonstrating the skill and grit normally reserved for play later in the season. With exceptional passing by the back line, and pinpoint sets, Chill came out on top with a fingernail-biting 16-14 win.
While still early in the season, the lessons learned from this tournament will undoubtedly be used by the Chill coaching staff to fine tune this talented team of young women into the volleyball powerhouse that this team is destined to be.

Registration Day
2009-10-15
With the selection process behind us, we can now move forward and officially welcome athletes and parents to the Northern Chill Volleyball Club. This welcome starts with our Registration Day, which will take place on Sunday October 18th at Lockerby Composite in Sudbury. We will begin at 2:00pm. This day will serve as opportunity for official welcomes and introductions as well as an opportunity for the organization to take care of some necessary administrative tasks.
Each team will move through five different stations over the course of the afternoon. The stations are as follows:
- Registration (Collection of Fees and Forms)
- Sizing for team wear
- Shopping
- Individual and Team Pictures
- Team Meetings
We anticipate the afternoon taking approximately 2.5 hours, so please plan accordingly. It is important that you make a point of attending as fees and forms need to be collected and pictures can be completed with all in attendance. Athletes are required to bring black spandex with them as well as socks and their volleyball shoes. You will be required to wear these during the team pictures.
We are also fortunate to have our Mizuno representative from North Bay and Killer Instinct from Toronto agree to attend our Registration Day so parents and athletes will have the opportunity to make some volleyball purchases on site to begin their respective seasons. The Mizuno representative will have shoes, knee pads, ankle braces and a variety of other items. Killer Instinct will be bringing spandex, sports bras and metal water bottles as well as their regular line of volleyball clothing. Parents will also be able to place their orders with Killer Instinct for our CHILL Fan Wear.
Please ensure that all necessary forms are completed prior to attending and that all required fees are accounted for, to ensure our Registration Day moves smoothly and efficiently.
